Hanami...what is it?


Every spring, people all over Japan will congregate under the blossom to eat drink and be merry. Tuesday was a public holiday, so a group of us set off to Oume (hour train from central Tokyo) to have a picnic amongst the plum blossom for Hanami. 'Hana' means flower and 'Mi' means to look, so you could say that hanami means 'looking at flowers'. We then hiked to a sake brewery, where our efforts were rewarded with a few drinks.
